State Street Ballet Young Dancers to Perform Annual Celebration of Dance
The State Street Ballet Young Dancers proudly present its annual Celebration of Dance, on March 12 at 7:00 pm at the Lobero Theatre. The performance serves as the company’s main fundraiser and showcases the talents of dancers in the company’s pre-professional training program, combining the talents of local, visiting, and student choreographers.
This year’s show features the classic children’s tale “Peter and the Wolf.” Adapted by composer Sergei Prokofiev and based on the Russian folk tale, this playful ballet of Peter and his friends as they venture past the meadow gate is sure to delight one and all. Other performance highlights include “Intersection,” choreographed by State Street Ballet Director Rodney Gustafson and set to Max Richter’s innovative recomposed version of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Longtime SSBYD choreographer Kassandra Taylor Newberry returns with her piece “A State of Being,” an energetic shimmy set to a collage of oldies. Celebration of Dance will also showcase choreography by Marina Fliagina, Allison Gustafson, Meredith Harrill, and Cecily Stewart, as well as student emerging choreographers Fiona Chandrasekaran, Jenna Comstock, and Kate Winterbauer.
SSBYD was founded as a pre-professional training program, providing young dancers with the discipline and performing experience necessary for a career in dance. The dancers train under the direction of Allison Gustafson and Nicole Comella and perform works ranging from classical to contemporary. SSBYD is an apprentice company to the professional company State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara, directed by Rodney Gustafson, nationally recognized for its innovative choreography and unique style.
